Private Horatio Rice

 

Horatio Rice was born on 7 April 1895 at 33 Rowland Street, Belfast, the third of nine children of plasterer Horatio Rice and his wife Margaret (née Wilson). (His father also had two children by a previous marriage.) By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at 22 Donegall Avenue, Belfast, with his father, step-mother, seven siblings and a half-brother, and working as a message boy.

Rice enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 11 November 1915 (No.1843 – later Corps of Hussars No.71587).

He embarked for France between 1916 and 1918, remaining with the regiment until the end of the war.

On 10 March 1919 Rice was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
